*Rev. Dlamini was shot and killed by intruders in his home in early February 2006. The following is from an e-mail communication dated February 6, 2006 to Rev. B.R. Dlamini, Moderator, and Rev. C.S. Mkhize, Secretary, of the KwaZulu-Natal Region of the UCCSA:
Dear friends of the KZN Region --
In a regular telephone call with Florence Madlala [she is the Convenor of the Region's Mission Council] yesterday, we heard the shocking and wrenchingly sad news of Ezrome Dlamini's death, and some news of this moment of visitation of unthinkable evil into the lives of the family, the church, and the community. We can think of no words adequate to express our sympathy for all of those directly and indirectly touched by this event, but we too anguish at this time. Ours is a distant echo of the pain that you and those close to him will be feeling, but even here, a third of the way around the world from the act, it reverberates and leaves us stunned and shaken.
We had spoken with Ezrome by telephone not that many days back, and were working with him towards our own return visit to the Adams churches to open their participation in one-on-one church-to-church relationships with local congregations of the UCC here in Massachusetts. We would have seen him upon our scheduled return to KZN in a few weeks' time, and were to visit and make a presentation at a group of the Adams outstations on the last Sunday in March. We'll wait to deal with those questions until we're back in Durban. We know well that the disruption of those specific plans is only a minor part of the turmoil that is now felt, and truly are of no immediate moment.
However, we wanted to say that when we are back with you in a few weeks' time, and have the chance to speak with the folks at Adams, we'll be seeking each of your help and guidance (and that of others in the Region, as you think right) also in seeing if and how, as the Adams churches seek to move forward from this dark time, their late minister's intention to establish these linkages from his churches to their friends in the Mass Conference could be part of their ongoing lives as churches. It can well be that being in an extended church family, with a 'matched' church here, could be a good thing also at such a time; as you know from your own churches' experience in the early stages of this "I3L" idea, it very much depends upon the particular churches and people engaged, but the possibility is certainly there. We'll hope to talk with you about this as your time allows, when we're back in Durban.
Please accept, and convey to those in the churches of the Region, the Adams Circuit, the community and, most especially, Betty and the family, our deepest condolences, and our dismay at the event, but our firm trust in the greater assurances of our common faith. We pray for God's help and guidance, and the peace of His grace, with us all, and with them especially, at and from this time.
