The I3L Chorus

The music which you may have listened to at the I3L home page, or on the 'What is I3L?' page, is the chorus "Ibandla lami linge lakho".  (Hear it again here: I3L Chorus)

Choruses are used at various points in the services especially at the Zulu churches in KZN.

The origin of the I3L chorus --

From a July, 2005 letter to the KZN churches participating in ‘Ibandla lami linge lakho’ –

As some of you have experienced, over recent weeks we have introduced our sermons on, or presentations about, the church-to-church programme, with an ‘I3L chorus.’  In those places where we’ve tried it, the congregations have picked it up very quickly, which is really fun to hear.

We’ve had requests for the music, and especially for the music in a tonic sol-fa notation.  We want to thank Mr. Vuma Dumakude, the head of the KZN Region’s Mission Council’s music unit, for providing that transcription.

With Mr. Dumakude’s help, then, we are able to give you the enclosed copies of the chorus in the separate notations.  If on receiving this, you are not a ‘music person’ in your church, could you please pass this on to that person or persons!

There is of course no rule or requirement that you make any use of this little chorus.  But this music may, in its use from time to time, be one further small aspect of the effort of linking us all, highlighting the relationships you are each beginning to build with your ‘matched, cousin’ churches in Massachusetts, and the people of those churches.  May God bless these efforts, your churches, and the people of your churches.

Our best wishes to you all.  – Jan and Ruthann.

The words to the chorus --

In isiZulu -- "Ibandla lami, Ibandla lakho, Ibandla lami linge lakho / Ibandla le_nkhosi, Ibandla lethu, Ibandla lami linge lakho"

[Translated to English -- "My church, your church, My church is your church / The church of the Lord, Our church! My church is your church"]
